Thought – If you think you can…you can…

Thought – If you think you can’t…

Its a strange thing thought. No one knows where it comes from, and we have very little control, if any, over what thoughts we experience. But think thoughts we do, and then we act upon them as if they were true. Most of the thoughts we have pass through our minds without us taking much notice of them.

Good and bad thoughts…

Some thoughts take our attention and we become very aware of them.

The positive ones we are grateful for and we accept them, even if they are fleeting.

Negative thoughts we also take notice of, and usually, without examing them we buy into what they are telling us, even if there is very little truth in them.

So who decides which thoughts are good and which are not?

You do…you decide if you like the content of your thoughts or not.

And whether you like them or not is based on how you see the world – based on your own personal experiences.

So if you have had instances of failing at things you tried to do in the past you may tend to view doing new things with suspicion.

You may well think that because something didn’t go as well as you would have liked in the past then this new thing won’t be likely to go well either.

If you think you can’t then you probably won’t succeed, you can effectively set yourself up to fail.

On the other hand, if something went well in the past then you have a different mindset to draw upon, one that sets you up to succeed, one that doesn’t have the negativity from the past driving it – so if you think you can then you are more likely to triumph.

But it doesn’t have to be this way…

Every thought you have is different, no two are exactly the same – they may be similar but never the same.

If you allow them to just be and don’t take them as being true, then they will pass, you can learn to ignore them and simply carry on doing whatever you want to do – because failing in the past doesn’t mean failing every time you try something – it just means it didn’t work last time.

The only thing that stops you from trying again is your thinking about the past and then projecting that thought of failure into the future.

As far as I know, there is no one who can predict the future with any accuracy, so why do you think you can?

They’re not your thoughts…

So don’t worry about whether you think you can do something or not – those thoughts aren’t yours, you didn’t choose them, they just appeared, and they can just as easily disappear and be replaced with new thoughts if you don’t try to hang on to them.

Just go for it

If there is something you want to do just go for it, the only thing holding you back is your thinking, and most of the time the imagined disasters we predict don’t come true…

The Mental Health Initiative…

We work with people from all walks of life helping them to overcome feelings of stress and anxiety. We show people the role that thought plays in their lives and help them to look at life from a new perspective, one that sets them free and lets the feel-good factor come back into their lives.

Don’t put up with being less than you want to be – if you want to be one of those people that think you can – then you really can…perhaps you just need a little help to get there.

If you would like to talk to us about getting your life back on track you can contact us by email at help@tmhi.org.uk and we will be delighted to help in any way we can.
