Mental Health Training Helps, Doesn't it?
There are many training providers doing a great job and helping people to recognise Mental Health issues via Mental Health Training courses. These courses range from half day and one day awareness sessions, to more intensive two day Mental Health First Aider training.
These types of training bring a much needed awareness of Mental Health issues. Even going some way to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues, but sadly doesn't equip the attendees with the skills needed to help with the more serious Mental Health issues people often suffer with.
Often even the trained Mental Health First Aider can't help the sufferer, and then they have no option but to signpost them to get further help.
The real cost of Mental Health
Signposting means a referral to a Doctor or Mental Health Team. Often there are long waiting times to be seen and treated by a specialist, and once seen recovery may include medication and ongoing therapy.
This often results in long term absence from work. Leaving the employer with a choice of managing without the employee, or hiring in an expensive and often underperforming replacement. In the worse case scenario they leave their job, and then there is the upheaval, and cost of recruiting and training a suitable replacement.
And of course for the employee there is the risk of job loss or reduced income until they are fit for work again. Plus the stigma of having a "mental health condition" which may affect future promotion/job prospects.
And let's not forget that many physical ailments often have Mental Health issue like Stress or Anxiety as their root cause.
So is there a better way?
